How long would you want to wait for surgery?

Recent research shows that those on waiting lists are waiting an average of 224 days! HFA (Health Funds Association) chief executive Roger Styles said that more public and private surgery was being done over the past decade, but the ageing population meant the need was growing.

The research also shows that there are approximately 280,000 people waiting for elective surgery, and more than half are not on waiting lists – probably because their pain does not meet the required threshold!! Those on the waiting list are in the public system as there is no real waiting list for people in the private system. The outcomes can therefore be very different for those in the public system versus those in the private system.

A quarter of those on waiting lists have to take time of work because of the health issue. I wonder what percentage continues to work but at what human costs?
